RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts down to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
